Abstract:
Red-mite are a menace to poultry farmers the world over. These insidious insects are difficult to see, hunt at night and target roosting hens, feeding on their blood. Red Mite change colour from brown to red following a full meal. They leave chickens irritable, aggressive, reduce their productivity ( can prevent laying) and cause anaemia throughout flocks.
Poultry farmers try all sorts of solutions to reduce infestation, from power-washing and aggressive chemical sprays (some try annual diesel washes to sheds) to even using flame-throwers! The insects breed rapidly (7 day cycle), are active in the warm summer months and can be very distressing to flocks and financially challenging to businesses.

The Challenge
Red Mite can live for six months without food, are difficult to locate and can replicate quickly.
Colonies are popular in wooden nesting areas, under metal -rail feed trays, cracks, crevices, perch areas, especially ends of roosting branches. If they get into roofing felt, it may be impossible to ever eradicate without changing infrastructure materials. Using traditional control methods can be very costly, with weekly cleaning routines and expensive power methodologies for individual hens and deployment of aggressive chemicals. Other infestations around foul such as lice will require additional solutions, all of which cuts margin in a business that is low margin to begin with.
The Solution

Application
Simply spray all areas with the coating. Where surfaces are absorbent, with tiny cracks or crevices, drench the surface.
Outcome
A case study in German showed that the natural repellent coatings worked well. Both animals and insects have highly developed senses for atom and molecule detection and will resist specific scents and aromas. This is a humane deterrent that does not physically damage or kill life.
Red Mite Treatment may be required annually, assuming the sheds are washed every year.
However a pre-treatment time and motion study showed that cleaning staff time was reduced by 40% when treating nano-coated surfaces.
Two trials are underway in UK and Ireland using these natural repellents.
