Highway to heaven

Abstract:
Imagine taking a journey to Mars and beyond on a lift that reaches 96,000 kilometres into the sky. This would be the ultimate highway to heaven, one that would enable mankind to take the next great leap into space, allowing larger payloads to be launched much more cheaply - and safely - than any method in use today, according to its most bullish proponents. Astronauts could be riding one skywards at a stately 193 k/mh within the next 15 years, according to Dr Brad Edwards, director of research at the Institute for Scientific Research, West Virginia, who is developing the far-out proposal with money from NASA's Institute for Advanced Concepts.
