Nano’s got the ways and memes for a viral assault on pop culture
Abstract:
Nanotechnology is a particularly infectious virus. I’m not talking about a virus like influenza that replicates and travels from organism to organism, but a media virus, an idea that spreads through popular culture. Depending on what someone outside of the small tech industry (or perhaps even within it) has read, heard, or watched, nano means everything from carbon nanotubes to stain-free pants, robots in our bloodstream to the Library of Congress in a sugar cube. Nano could save the world, destroy it or maybe even make some people rich. There’s a lot of conceptual DNA in those four letters, hence nano’s virulence.
