Society of Manufacturing Engineers Elects First Woman President

For the first time in its 78-year history, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has elected a woman to lead the organization. Barbara M. Fossum, PhD, FSME will serve as 2010 president and was officially sworn in - along with the rest of the 2010 SME Executive Committee - at the Society's Awards and Installation Banquet held November 14, in Dearborn, Mich.

As president, Fossum would like to coordinate efforts among professional societies and other organizations to achieve key objectives for the manufacturing community.

"I believe SME can be a catalyst among professional organizations to make progress toward a national manufacturing strategy," she stated. "Working together, government, industry and academia can rebuild U.S. manufacturing capability in key industries."

Fossum would also like to work with other organizations to refine the image of manufacturing as a good career option and develop educational paths that prepare the future generation for jobs in manufacturing.

Fossum brings a diverse academic and industrial background to SME. She has held a number of positions in industry and academia. Currently, she is an independent consultant and coach in the areas of strategic planning, process engineering and business planning for entrepreneurial startups. Fossum also is a Senior Research Fellow of the IC2 Institute of the University of Texas at Austin where she works in worldwide economic development projects involving technology commercialization. She holds a PhD in operations management, an MBA, an MS in mathematics/computer science, and a BA in Physics.

A member of SME since 1989, Fossum has served on the Society's Executive Committee and Board of Directors, Ad Hoc Lifelong Learning Committee and the CASA/SME Board of Advisors and was an editor of CASA's Blue Book series. She was elected an SME Fellow in 1996.

Also elected to serve on the 2010 SME Executive Committee:

President-elect: Paul D. Bradley, PE
Bradley is managing director for Peterson Industries where he has worked in a variety of roles since joining the company in 1980. An SME member since 1989, he twice served as chair of SME Adelaide Chapter 169 and is a recipient of the SME Ralph E. Cross Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award. In 2001 he received the Governor's Leadership Foundation Fellowship Award. Bradley completed a four-year apprenticeship as a fitter and turner and earned a diploma of management from O'Halloran Hill College.

Vice President: LaRoux K. Gillespie, Dr. Eng, FSME, CMfgE, PE
Gillespie retired as quality assurance manager of Honeywell's Federal Manufacturing and Technologies division (Kansas City, MO) where he led a 200-employee group responsible for product and operating quality for the 2800-employee plant. An SME Fellow, Gillespie has been extremely active in the Society since becoming a student member in 1962, having served on numerous committees over the years and leading a number of SME technical conferences. He has degrees in both manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering.

Secretary/Treasurer: Dennis S. Bray, PhD, FSME
Bray is president of Bray Innovation Group, LLC. Prior to founding Bray Innovation Group in 2009 he was the president and CEO of Cincinnati Incorporated, an advanced manufacturer of metalworking machinery. His entire career has been devoted to broadening the knowledge base of manufacturing. A member of SME since 2002, Bray was elected to the SME College of Fellows in 2003 and has been honored with the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award as well as the Ford Foundation Fellowship-University of Wisconsin. He holds a bachelors degree in engineering and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

At-Large Executive Committee Member: Wayne Frost,CMfgE
Frostrecently retired from John Deere Waterloo Works where he managed the lean manufacturing program. With John Deere for 37 years, he accepted increasingly responsible positions in manufacturing management, quality assurance and supply management. An active SME member since 1983, Frost has served at the international, regional and chapter levels. His honors include the SME Award of Merit, SME President's Award, the SME Waterloo Chapter Kurt E. Lear Award and the John Deere General Manager's Award. He earned a BS and MS from the University of Northern Iowa.

The following new directors, elected by SME membership to serve two-year terms on the Board of Directors, were also installed at the Fall Meeting:

Dean L. Bartles, PhD
Bartles is vice president and general manager of the Large Caliber Ammunition Strategic Business Unit for the Ordnance and Tactical Systems Division of General Dynamics Corporation. He also serves on the Department of Commerce Manufacturing Council and the Manufacturing Council for the National Defense Industrial Association. An SME member since 2002, he has a BS from Shepherd College, an MS from Tampa College, an MBA from Shippensburg University and a doctorate in business administration from Nova Southeastern University. He expects to graduate from Indiana State in 2011 with a PhD in technology management with a concentration in manufacturing systems.

Michael F. Molnar, FSME, CMfgE, PE
Molnar is the director of environmental policy and sustainable development for Cummins Inc. and is responsible for corporate initiatives such as energy efficiency, sustainability of operations and compliance affairs. He has 25 years of industrial experience in leadership roles across functions. He has held many leadership positions with SME since joining in 1982 including chair of the SME Member Council. He was elected an SME Fellow in 2008 and holds BSME and MSMSE degrees from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.

Robert R. Nesbitt, CMfgE
Nesbitt is manager of advanced development and research advisor at Eli Lilly and Company in the Pharmaceutical Delivery Systems Division. He has served on the International Standards Community as part of the ISO Community since 1999 in the area of medical devices. Joining SME in 1984, Nesbitt served on the SME Board of Directors in 2008 and has participated in manufacturing executive forums. In 2006, he received the Lilly Research Laboratories' President's Award recognizing his work in establishing a collaborative network of development partners in the device design development area. He was educated at Iowa State University and the University of Chicago.
