Abstract:
Iranian researchers designed an anti-infection drug delivery system based on nanotechnology, using turmeric extract and natural polymers.
The product can heal the wounds quickly as well as having antibacterial properties. The proposed nanodrug has proved efficient in the treatment of infections in animal samples.
Infection is one of the most important causes of death and disability in humans across the world. Although the consumption of various antibiotics is common for the treatment of different infections, the antibiotics have side effects and they create medical resistance in the body after a while. Moreover, antibiotics are not able to heal the damaged tissues.
Curcumin is a natural yellow compound, which is extracted from turmeric, and it has antibacterial properties. Chitosan is another natural polymer with low toxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility. The present study showed that chitosan tripolyphosphate nanoparticles that contain curcumin drug can be used as power agents in the treatment of estafilococo aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.
The drug nanosystem has been designed in a way that it prevents in vitro growth of bacteria, and no drug resistance occurs against them. The interesting point is that this nanodrug is able to quickly heal the wounds too. The product can be produced at low cost and can be conserved easily.
Based on the obtained results, it seems that the proposed nanodrug can be considered an appropriate replacement for a great number of commonly-used antibiotics.
Results of the research have been published in Iranian Journal of Biotechnology, vol. 12, issue 3, 2014, pp. 1012-1 to 1012-8.
